Selective Popping Carnival
This event is an easy and effective way to show how abortion discriminates against the unborn, minorities, and those of low economic status. Not much preparation has to take place, so a group of any size can organize this event that will save lives on your campus.
Materials Needed:
1. Abortion Discrimination Facts
2. Balloons
3. A large wooden board or cork board
4. Table for your display
5. Darts
1. Choose a date and time for your Carnival
- Choose a day on which your campus is most busy.
- Choose a time of day that also accomplishes the goals of high visibility and traffic for your project.
2. Reserve a location for your Carnival
- Choose an area on campus with the most student traffic, such as in front of the dining hall or student center, etc.
- Reserve the area through the administration, leaving an area for a table to hold your display.
3. Sign people up to run the Carnival
- There should always be a couple people from your group running the display for protection.
- There should be additional help to sign people up for your group email and meeting updates.
- Someone should always have a camera on hand to record any vandalism or inappropriate acts towards your display and/or members.
- Invite lots of people to attend the event, as a crowd will draw even more people out of interest.
4. Be prepared with literature
- Have handouts with factual abortion statistics and facts concerning discrimination.
- Have information available on a local PRC and post-abortive material and references.
- Have your group information ready to hand out, so you can recruit new students to your meetings and events.
- It would also be wise to have on hand a copy of any communications with the administration allowing you to have your display.
5. Prepare your team
- Make sure your members are all prepared to explain how the unborn are discriminated against and how this leads to abortion. Also, group members should be prepared to explain how Planned Parenthood targets minorities and those of low incomes.
6. Set up your Display
- On little strips of paper type up various sayings and statistics demonstrating how abortion discriminates against the unborn
A. “Congratulations- You Win!! …But wait… if you are under 25 years of age, you have not reached peak brain development and are therefore ineligible to receive a prize.”
B. “Congratulations! You win! …But wait. On average, people don’t reach their peak muscle strength until age 30! If you are under 30, you are ineligible to receive a prize.”
C. “Oh too bad! You come from a family who does not earn enough money to support their children. You would have won a prize but we do not use resources for families who can’t afford them.”
D. “Maybe next time you’ll win a prize…right now we prefer males with green eyes”
E. “Oh wow, had you of been living off campus you would have won a prize. Maybe next time you’ll choose a better place to live.”
F. “Clearly you are not strong enough to tear through a phone book… so I don’t think someone that weak deserves a prize.”
G. “Wait… you mean your mom didn’t plan on having you? That you weren’t conceived under “ideal circumstance” you most definitely can not receive a prize!”
H. I’ve got a deal to make with you…if you help me eliminate all of the purple people I’ll give you their prize too.”
- Insert the strips of paper into the Balloons.
- Blow up Balloons.
- Tape the balloons to the wooden board or cork board.
- Have students throw darts at the Balloons to “Pop a Balloon Win a Prize.
- When they read the paper inserted in their balloon be prepared to explain the meaning in further detail.
I’m sorry…I mean, we’re just discriminating against you based on your (age, health, size, etc)… That hurts, doesn’t it? Wait! we’re with the Pro-Life Group on Campus! We don’t discriminate! Here, pick some candy. What we are actually trying to demonstrate here is that people often don’t see preborn children as human beings based on arbitrary characteristics like these. Would you be interested in fighting for the rights of preborn children with us?”
(or something along those lines.)
