Another day, another misleading story from the media about the Protect Life Rule, which bars abortion vendors from receiving Title X funds, unless they separate their abortion business from their healthcare business.
This one comes from Cincinnati, where two Planned Parenthood facilities have announced they will close, after making the political decision to refuse Title X funds.
Both WLWT 5 and and WCPO 9 covered the story by interviewing Meg Wittman of Cincinnati Right-To-Life and Caroline Lembright, described as a “Planned Parenthood patient” in one story, with WLWT 5 noting she is a student at the University of Cincinnati. The reporters do not note that Lembright is a former Planned Parenthood volunteer and intern. To be fair, both stories are relatively fair, describing the Title X program and quoting from both pro-life and pro-abortion people.
The WLWT 5 story also notes that there are other community health centers that provide similar services to Planned Parenthood, quoting Wittman.
But what they didn’t note in interviewing Lembright is that not only are there other community health centers she can go to her own school provides the same services that Planned Parenthood provides.
Yupp. If she wants accessible birth control, the University of Cincinnati health centers provide that. And other services too, including breast exams, pregnancy testing, STI testing and treatment, and pap smears.
Not everyone can access university health centers; we get that. But if a media outlet is interviewing a student, they should rightly ask and investigate if the student can access those services through their school. After all, if transportation is a key issue in accessing health services, because many students don’t have access to a car, then it’s fair to ask about going to the health center on campus. In fact, that’s one reason schools offer a health center on campus; to ensure that students, no matter their transportation situation, can access health care while at school.
